Sequel to “Swallowed in the Sea.” Leoben rescues Kara.

Second story in the Sea series

Chapter One: True Identity

In his shuttle, Leoben reviewed the skirmish report—the Centurions had fired on Kara, but there was a chance she survived.

“They may soon use atomics,” Caprica Six said. “We cannot stay!”

Leoben took her hand. She understood. She would download another Leoben, and he would leave for the surface. If he did not make it back before the atomics, some part of him would be lost forever, but his love could never be forsaken.

When he feels, he is no longer a machine. Leoben/Kara Eye of Jupiter

First story in the Sea series

“The danger to us is unacceptable.” In this moment, he truly was machine. He could not feel. He dared not feel. Galactica would nuke the surface. The radiation would destroy them all. Somewhere his consciousness would still survive. The others would take another Leoben out of storage, another one with memories of her.

I will never forget this.

He tried to imagine so many times what it felt to kiss. He no longer had to imagine. He knew crush, lust.

And he knew love.

“They have orders that Three and Baltar make it to the surface,” the Three next to him protested.

“What does it matter?” Cavil’s logic returned to him “Wipe the human race out forever. We are machine. What does it matter if we find Earth in five days or five thousand years?”

Machine. Can he be a machine now?

The danger to us is unacceptable.

The danger to her is unacceptable.

He placed his hands in the goo. He linked his mind to the Hybrid.

He remembered her.

His neutral expression broke bitterly into a frown.

“Leoben?” asked Caprica beside him.

He turned his cold stare to Three. “You will order the centurions to protect Kara at all costs.”

He closed his eyes. The hybrid’s voice came to the humanoid models clear and unbroken: “The pattern finder shall embrace the stars. All will fade, but the finder and the star remain.”

Post “Maelstrom”

Second story in the Realizing series

Tigh looked on, shocked. His one eye threatened to water. For all the times in the past he had hated Kara, then for all the times he had grown warm to her on New Caprica, he realized he had no one left. He lost his wife, but after that he looked after Kara, who reminded him of himself. He tried to look after her, especially after what he discovered about Leoben.

Now he would have to look out after the Old Man and Apollo. She would have wanted him to. Though he had no children, since New Caprica, Kara had been the awkward niece. Now he must look after her would-be father-in-law and husband.

It had been so clear to so many. For years, he knew nothing could stop Starbuck and Apollo. Until the cylons changed things and gave them a rose-colored life as a broken Kara and Lee.

Tigh remained in CIC as Adama trudged out of CIC toward the hangar. Helo followed.

Dee hung her head low, knowing that, in many ways, she would never see her husband again.

Gaeta looked on. A strange weight fell upon him, grief as he had never imagined it. Something in his head clicked.

oOo

An eerie silence fell upon the hanger deck as Apollo landed. Not even his landing gear appeared to make much sound. The silence in everyone’s heads was deafening.

On any day, a pilot may die. But this was no pilot. This was a legend. Starbuck, the other half of Apollo.

Now Apollo landed in the hanger alone.

The Chief helped him out of the viper. He said nothing.

Lee caught his father’s eye. He saluted him. Lee raised his hand, but could not finish the salute.

He fell upon his knees and wept.

Adama bent down to him. He joined in his son’s tears.

The others in the hangar began to step away from them, giving them their room.

Helo looked on. Athena stood in the distance.

You have a destiny, Kara. They can put you with someone you like. Athena remembered saying those words to her after she escaped The Farm.

The man she loved stood in front of them, but then again, the man she loved was dead. He died with her.

oOo

Caprica Six fell into an uneasy sleep. She dreamt she was back on the Cylon Baseship. She walked down the corridors, but none of the other Six models would look at her. The Brother Cavils hissed their disapproval.

Finally rounding a corner, she found the Boomer Eight speaking in hushed tones to a Simon.

She heard weeping that tore her soul.

She pushed past Boomer and Simon and saw Leoben kneeling on the floor. He sobbed into a woman’s blond hair. Caprica could not make out the woman’s features from her burnt flesh.

Caprica reached forward to touch Leoben’s shoulder. His pain flowed into her, and she could hear his voice: “This is love.”

Before the final events of Maelstrom, Leoben has a vision.

First story of Realizing (I Love You) – LeobenKara

Leoben jerked his hands out of the hybrid interaction fluid of the navigation panel. The vision had been clear—undeniable. But, had it happened yet, or was it yet to come?

The Sixes looked at him with suspicion.

“If you have any love for God, you will keep the Cavils and Fives from me,” he said quickly.

One of them nodded for all.

He looked at the Eight across from her. “Where is your sister Boomer? She must meet me at once at the hybrid.”

The Eight said nothing but felt a strange sadness as Leoben left the area.

“God have mercy,” the Eight said, our leader is weeping.

oOo

At the hybrid, Leoben waited for Boomer. He relived his vision several times as he connected his mind to the hybrid’s mind. She understood. She knew where to go.

Boomer stood behind him, sensing his grief as she would if he were an Eight.

“We must go,” he said, “or Kara will die.”

Fade

Kara’s thoughts Maelstrom. One Shot

Fifth story in The Path to Phoenix series

We all must accept our destinies. I have tried to run away, but in the end I see that you and I will never be unless I pass through the storm. You are not strong enough yet to follow me, but you will be.

oOo

Fade II

Post Finale

(not part of Path to Phoenix)

Lee watched the most important person in his life fade away. In fact, she had not faded as he watched. She had already been dead some time, but he had denied it. He had hoped so badly to see her again, wanted it.

In the end, it was everyone who loved her that revived her ghost. First Leoben found her soul. A part of that unknown being that called itself Gaius’ god revealed itself to her through her image of Leoben. Lee hadn’t known the extent of her vision. He hadn’t known that she had sex with him. But even if he did, Lee did not care.

Lee remembered the day he met her. The day that was most precious to him and filled with the most regret. If Zak had not have died, maybe they would have broken up and she could have ended up with Lee.

They did end up together. Across stars and death itself, Starbuck and Apollo reunited one last time. But life had become ugly for so many. His wife, ex-wife, killed herself. Her husband became closer to the perfect machine he had always known he was.

Even as her ghost walked away and bid Sam farewell, he knew he would see her on the other side.

It’s time to go back, Kara, Sam’s voice came to her mind, He’ll become a ghost after you, a ghost in a living shell.

To be continued in “Rebirth.”

Chapter Three: Safe

The next day she asked him, “Have you seen Three destroy me?”

“I have seen her try. She doesn’t.”

“Why destroy me? Does she hate humans or is it something about me?”

“You were given an honor she thought was hers.”

“What are you talking about?”

Leoben reached across the table and took her hand. She felt drawn to him and did not pull away.

“There are twelve models, Kara. Each model accountable to the ones before it.”

“Which are you?”

“I am Leoben. I will always be Leoben. Two models came before Three, and she knows that unless the rest of the models side with her, she can’t oppose us.”

“You’re their leader then, the first model or the second.”

“I am Leoben. I will always be Leoben to you. Now that you know, it is time I introduced you to someone. Wait here. Don’t leave, there are others outside that will find you.”

“Then I’m not that safe.”

“The other one is waiting outside. You are safe.”

He left Kara to her thoughts, and she noticed how he never referred to himself or the other of the first two Cylons by model number. It occurred to her that maybe they did not have a model number. One was the first model, one the second, but maybe they used names instead of numbers.

No, they were not human. She had to remember that.

oOo

Two Cavils watched Leoben leave. He looked briefly to them and they nodded. He understood that Three was not around. Looking a different direction, he could see another Leoben standing guard.

“How is she brother?” the first Cavil asked.

“She is well. She begins to think of me as a human.”

“Then all is well,” the second Cavil said.

“Our brother waits for you,” the first Cavil said.

Chapter Two: All In Good Time

The next day began nearly the same way. This time the meal was chicken and the vegetables were different. Everything felt the same.

She preferred the chicken. She could eat it with her fingers and Leoben did not have to cut it for her. She kept telling herself that he was a Cylon, but as the minutes passed on, she began to believe the scenario he set up for her. Leoben became the star chef husband who prepared the food for his wife and watched her eat.

“Why don’t you join me?” she offered. “I didn’t see you eat anything.”

“I have already eaten. I have to make sure you eat.”

“Why?”

“So you don’t hurt yourself, Kara. The cycle of pain can stop. You deserve happiness.”

“How are you going to give that to me?”

“You’ll see soon.”

“Why not show me now?”

“All in good time.”

Based on Season 3 spoilers – Kara reflects

Second story in The Path to Phoenix series

Chapter One: Trust

Kara felt his hand brush against her shoulder as he set the plate of food in front of her. How different this was from the time she interrogated him. He seemed almost human, like a loving husband setting down a meal for a tired wife. Her tattoo on her arm itched. It was her last reminder that she was already married. She did not know if Sam still lived, but right now, she had to believe that he did.

If she didn’t have Sam, right now she’d have Leoben talking sweetly to her. He smelt so human, even somehow found cologne to wear. In their own world, everything was as it should be. A loving husband fixed his wife a meal, and he waited to see how she liked it. The other colonists might kill for this meal. It was not rations, rather a large steak – from where she did not know – and vegetables. She always hated vegetables before the war, but now anything not a MRE was a delicacy.

Leoben leaned over her and began to cut her meat. “You should eat,” he said, leaning near her ear. “You need your strength.”

“Why not take me back to the prison cell?” she asked.

“That was for your own protection,” he said.

“From who? You? You don’t seem to eager to hurt me. Why bother cooking all this if you just wanted to kill me?”

“I don’t want to hurt you, Kara. Others do. Model three will kill you on sight.”

“I thought all Cylons were on the same team.”

“Not always. Three is dangerous. She is the one you knew as D’anna Beirs. She’ll destroy you, Kara, but I won’t let her do it.”

Kara looked up into his face, almost forgetting he was not human. “Why tell me this?”

“I have seen the future, Kara. This has all happened before, but this time, you get your chance at happiness. I will give that to you. You sent my soul back to God, and now I have returned for you. I will protect you.”

“There is always another agenda,” she said bitterly.

“Is there?” he asked.

“What’s yours?”

“You will see in time, but I assure you, it is not to hurt you.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because you already do.”

Chapter Three: Visitation

Leoben—the same model that had first fallen in love with Kara Thrace and the one whom she “sent to heaven”—stopped in front of the cylon maximum security prison. All of model twelves, the youngest model cylons were beyond this passage.

He had a right to visit twelve. After all, he was “Galactica Leoben,” and that alone gave him access to this model.

A model three stood outside. Two eights stood near her. He answered the three’s question before she asked, “I am here to see twelve. I must discuss strategies to destroy the Galactica.”

“And what makes you think twelve has been able to talk with the contact?”

“Perhaps not,” Galactica Leoben answered. “But I must speak with one of him.”

“Any one?” the eight on his left asked. She had already actively connected to her fellow eights.

“The most lucid,” he answered.

“Leda is satisfied,” the eight that spoke before said. “You may, and remember her proposal.”

Three wished to protest, but the word came from Leda, and she was not high enough to outrank her.

Galactica Leoben was content for that approval. For now, three would not ask any questions. Finally, he would be able to speak to his young brother.

He entered the prison, unaccompanied by the others. He had no guide to a lucid one. He would have to find one himself. He traveled down several corridors until he reached an open space. One twelve leaned over another, apparently feeding him.

“That one will do,” he thought.

“Who are you?” he asked the tweleve who tended to the other.

“I am Tier, the Third Attempt.” The twelfth cylon looked at him with those same piercing eyes Leoben had once seen on the Galactica. Leoben knew Tier would be unwavering in his duties, and decided that, indeed, Tier would be someone he could speak to.

“I must speak to you alone regarding Starbuck.”

“This one will not hear you,” Tier assured him, gesturing to the other twelve. “He has not yet recovered. The conditions here are deplorable.”

“Fine.” He took a moment to gather his thoughts. “Kara Thrace’s ovaries are very viable and compatible to you. Leda has offered me the first breeding opportunity, but I defer it to you. It is your right.”

“No,” Tier denied. “I cannot. Only my genetic donor belongs with her. No matter how many of us there are.”
