A/N: Lee gets the tag from Anders. I’m not sure if Anders ever gave it back to Kara. So, if he did, this is a little bit AU.

“Today, we lay to rest our fallen heroes. May they find peace with the gods. So say we all.”
So say we all.
The rest of Roslin’s words swarmed around Lee’s ears, but he did not hear them. He could feel nothing, not even a squeeze on his arm from Cally.
He did not pay attention to the others leaving. He did not hear his father.
“Major,” Adama said.
Lee looked at him, his hollow eyes only responding to the mention of his rank.
“It’s time to go home, Lee.”
“I have no home, not anymore.”
Adama grabbed the third dog tag hanging from Lee’s neck. He pulled. Lee yanked the tag away.
“This is my home,” Lee said. “She is my home,”
“She’s dead, Lee.”
“Then so am I.”

Post Finale
(not part of Path to Phoenix)
Lee watched the most important person in his life fade away. In fact, she had not faded as he watched. She had already been dead some time, but he had denied it. He had hoped so badly to see her again, wanted it.
In the end, it was everyone who loved her that revived her ghost. First Leoben found her soul. A part of that unknown being that called itself Gaius’ god revealed itself to her through her image of Leoben. Lee hadn’t known the extent of her vision. He hadn’t known that she had sex with him. But even if he did, Lee did not care.
Lee remembered the day he met her. The day that was most precious to him and filled with the most regret. If Zak had not have died, maybe they would have broken up and she could have ended up with Lee.
They did end up together. Across stars and death itself, Starbuck and Apollo reunited one last time. But life had become ugly for so many. His wife, ex-wife, killed herself. Her husband became closer to the perfect machine he had always known he was.
Even as her ghost walked away and bid Sam farewell, he knew he would see her on the other side.
It’s time to go back, Kara, Sam’s voice came to her mind, He’ll become a ghost after you, a ghost in a living shell.
To be continued in “Rebirth.”

He never forgave her for betraying him. For worse, never telling him why.
Lee found Kara at a practice range. Enraged, she hit a few targets. She yelled something deep and guttural, nothing he understood but rage and pain.
She had no right to feel that way. That was how he felt, and she was no equal. Once, Apollo and Starbuck were spoken in one breath. Now their names remained far away
“You missed,” he said, laughing to himself.
“I’m not on duty, Major. I don’t need your opinion.”
“You’ve never needed it, Captain. But you took it once: ‘No point unless you’re getting married.’ You’ve made your point, Captain.”
“What point did you want, Lee? That I’m frakked up?”
“You’ve always been. I’ve been wondering how long you can last without frakking up.”
Kara stepped closer to him and handed him the gun. “Show me how frakked up I am.”
Without missing a beat, he aimed the gun at her chest, calling her bluff. She grabbed the gun, aimed it higher, and she turned to the side.
“Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”
Lee lowered the gun. “That’s your problem, not mine.”

“Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”
He thought of the one time they made love, then how she twisted his words and ripped his heart out.
He squeezed the trigger, and then squeezed again. This was the only way they would be together.

“Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”
Lee lowered the gun. “That’s your problem, not mine.”
She grabbed his hand quickly and pulled the gun back into position. With her hand wrapped around his, she looked into his eyes one final time. She would not hurt him or any Adamas any longer.
Her thumb over his trigger finger, she squeezed.

Chapter Three: Visitation
Leoben—the same model that had first fallen in love with Kara Thrace and the one whom she “sent to heaven”—stopped in front of the cylon maximum security prison. All of model twelves, the youngest model cylons were beyond this passage.
He had a right to visit twelve. After all, he was “Galactica Leoben,” and that alone gave him access to this model.
A model three stood outside. Two eights stood near her. He answered the three’s question before she asked, “I am here to see twelve. I must discuss strategies to destroy the Galactica.”
“And what makes you think twelve has been able to talk with the contact?”
“Perhaps not,” Galactica Leoben answered. “But I must speak with one of him.”
“Any one?” the eight on his left asked. She had already actively connected to her fellow eights.
“The most lucid,” he answered.
“Leda is satisfied,” the eight that spoke before said. “You may, and remember her proposal.”
Three wished to protest, but the word came from Leda, and she was not high enough to outrank her.
Galactica Leoben was content for that approval. For now, three would not ask any questions. Finally, he would be able to speak to his young brother.
He entered the prison, unaccompanied by the others. He had no guide to a lucid one. He would have to find one himself. He traveled down several corridors until he reached an open space. One twelve leaned over another, apparently feeding him.
“That one will do,” he thought.
“Who are you?” he asked the tweleve who tended to the other.
“I am Tier, the Third Attempt.” The twelfth cylon looked at him with those same piercing eyes Leoben had once seen on the Galactica. Leoben knew Tier would be unwavering in his duties, and decided that, indeed, Tier would be someone he could speak to.
“I must speak to you alone regarding Starbuck.”
“This one will not hear you,” Tier assured him, gesturing to the other twelve. “He has not yet recovered. The conditions here are deplorable.”
“Fine.” He took a moment to gather his thoughts. “Kara Thrace’s ovaries are very viable and compatible to you. Leda has offered me the first breeding opportunity, but I defer it to you. It is your right.”
“No,” Tier denied. “I cannot. Only my genetic donor belongs with her. No matter how many of us there are.”

Chapter Two: Elder Brothers
CLYON OCCUPIED CAPRICA
Simon – the same model four that downloaded after he examined Starbuck not long ago – looked over his medical notes. Though he knew the others’ need for successful reproduction, he could not bring himself to do this. Leda offered him a great opportunity. Not many cylons had been offered an immediate breeding opportunity. As he had done many times before, Simon consulted his eldest brother, model one, called Leoben to humans.
“It troubles you again, brother?” Leoben asked.
“Yes, even though she is not here, I must still respect her wishes.”
“I am sure model five would not.”
“He would never be given the opportunity. Not for Starbuck’s child.” Simon pushed a crumpled piece of paper to him.
Leoben looked it over quickly and tucked it away in his pants’ pocket. “Twelve would be happy to see this.”
“Yes, brother,” Simon agreed, “he has waited long enough for this news.”
“You could allow him to go first.”
“I am still a doctor, brother. She needs to be healed before any one of us proceed.”
“There is such pain in her life. Galactica Leoben shared with me his time together with her as his soul took flight to God.”
“Her pain moves me. No child should have to suffer as she did.” Simon stared blankly at Leoben for a few moments. “The others warn our troublesome sister is coming, and the sixes are around the back.”
“You must secure me a time in your hospital. I must see the ovaries for myself.”
oOo
Later that day in Simon’s office, Leoben looked at the ovaries and saw his hope for the future.
Starbuck had a destiny—and Leoben wished it was with him.
Three locked the model Twelves in prison. She would not dare suggest boxing.
Leoben was their greatest hope in understanding Starbuck—to achieving their future.
Leoben thought perhaps to offer a twelve’s DNA for the child, but he remembered his words—only one man would do.

Lee must face his inner fears after he destroys the Resurrection Ship.
Chapter One: Lee’s Vision
Kara stood on the precipice of Lee’s mind, her face a beacon in his mind. He played that same expression over again in his mind. She said his name, relieved to see him again, welcoming him home to Caprica. In Caprica they had a family – two daughters and one son. The daughters looked a lot like Kara. The son looked like him. He peered into his son’s eyes. They were looking across the pont. A girl’s bright eyes stared back at them. Her mother, Sharon, stood behind her. Lee saw himself standing beside Sharon, placing his arm gently on her shoulder.
Lee’s grip tightened on the controls of the blackbird. The still bodies of the sleeping cylons haunted his mind. They looked so human, nearly childlike in their unawareness of their impending doom. This was not the Olympia, he told himself. There were cylons here, just as there were then. He would not allow himself to believe otherwise. They were not human.
He passed rows of the model that had accused Dr. Baltar of treason. Copies of Sharon were here too. He would not miss that one; he could avenge his father at last. As he approached his first target, he heard a voice mumble in his mind…
Kara laughed as she sprayed water at him. He dived for his hose and sprayed her back. For a moment, the uniform and all that was restricted was gone. He reached out to touch her…
He gasped as the woman turned around. It was Kara, beautiful as any goddess of Kobol. She smiled and the world stopped. This moment only existed for them. She asked him what he was too breathless to dare – dance.

A/N: I hope to help tide everyone over while they are waiting for Battlestar to return. Let’s all hope season four gets a decent series ending—tv shows are known for terrible ones—especially since the writer’s strike.
Even though this is not written in screenplay form, I tried to write it with a bit of a script feel, so that it may kind of be like reading an episode.
Many of my other Battlestar stories chronologically lead up to this one (see the ones labeled “Path to Phoenix”), but they don’t have to be read first.
Enjoy and please R&R. Thanks.
If anyone out there has better suggestions for the CIC comm talk, I would appreciate your help.
Did Anders get an official call sign? I’m going to call him C-Buck for now from his Pyramid days—someone else has probably already thought of this one.

SPACE
Lee never thought this day would come. He finally had what he wanted, but he knew all too well that she could easily be taken from him.
He wanted to follow her viper, follow her straight to Earth. He didn’t care what sort of planet it was. He cared not if the thirteenth colony was there. As long as she was with him, they could be the only people on earth, and he could be happy.
The cylons would have rather liked this plan. That is, if one of them had been a cylon. What Lee had in mind was exactly the original plan for Sharon and Helo.
Around them, they took no notice of the rest of the world.
And so, they had no idea of the price to be paid.

CAPRICA SIX’S CELL
“Leoben! Leoben!” Caprica shouted in her cell and doubled over in pain. In her mind, she tried to connect with her sisters and give them one request: “Stop them! Stop them!”
BALTAR’S SANCTUARY (PLACE OF SAFETY)
Gaius Baltar was confused, yet relieved to be saved by these strange people that thought he was a healer. Guided by his ever-present Inner Six, he always felt at ease.
That is, until Inner Six stood in front of him today.
“You must stop them, Gaius.”
“But you said . . . ?”
“Not these people, Gaius. What they are doing to Leoben . . .”
She had never said anything like this before.
“. . . but there is nothing you can do, Gaius. Save the child. Save Kara Thrace.”
“Kara Thrace is dead,” he said.
The religious throng about him stopped their murmurings. Those who knew who Kara Thrace was knew this fact already.
“It is God’s miracle that she lives, Gaius,” Inner Six continued, “she brings destruction to us all, but her love cannot be sacrificed.”
Inner Six kneeled before him, her eyes pleading. She took his hands in hers.
“You must protect her and Lee Adama. Their love cannot be destroyed.”
Normally, Gaius would have felt jealous rage at Lee’s name, but he had changed. Gaius loved Inner Six and loved Caprica. He had now been given a chance—by the Cylon God or the Lords of Kobol, he cared not whom—to have his love, and he felt obliged to protect Kara and Lee. Some god now finally brought them together, something Gaius ironically had in common with his former lawyer. Even without Inner Six’s plea before him, he would have helped them.
“Is she a cylon?” he asked.
The followers before him correctly assumed he meant Kara. So would Inner Six, but this question implied a deeper meaning for her.
“No,” Inner Six said, and her lips curled into a serene smile. “No. Leoben would have loved to have a child with her, and what a perfect hybrid it would have been. Yet Leoben learned the greatest love of all, and he let her go.

EPISODE ONE: RISING FROM THE ASHES
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA—CIC
Again, Admiral Bill Adama tried to contact his son. His message went through, but Lee never responded.
“Apollo—Lee—respond!”
Tory glanced at Tigh. Was Kara Thrace the fifth cylon? Was she their leader?
All CIC heard Lee’s voice again: “Kara.” Like a plea.
The Admiral spoke again into the comm., “Lee, come back home. Kara’s dead, you know that. Forget the cylons. Come home. We can talk. I won’t lose you, too.”
Lee’s voice seemed far away: “She’s right here with me.”
Adama gestured to Dee and she cut the outgoing transmission to Apollo. Now they would only receive transmissions from him. He didn’t want Lee to hear. He turned to Gaeta: “Mr. Gaeta, any strange readings on his bird? Is there another beside him?”
“Nothing unusual,” Gaeta replied, “but there is an unknown craft beside him.”
“Cylon?”
“The readings are more like a viper—this has the signature of the viper Starbuck last flew.”
Ander’s voice shouted over the comm, “Galactica, C-Buck. Two Basestars just jumped away. There wasn’t enough damage on them –.”
Not to jump, Adama finised. Whatever Lee was seeing, it had to be a trap, a well-laid one.
The next voice in CIC was a medic’s—Lt. Jameson.
“Admiral,” she said, “the prisoner cylon is unconscious. Transferring to the medical boy now.”
Sergeant Lawrence, the male marine in charge of guarding Caprica Six, added, “She shouted, ‘Leoben! Leoben!’ before she collapsed.”
“Brief me on her condition later,” Admiral Adama said, then cut that communications channel.
Adama looked wearily at Tigh.
“Do you believe in miracles?” Tigh asked him.
“It’s a cylon trick,” Adama said.
Adama turned to Dee. “Dualla, re-establish contact with Apollo.”
She clicked a few buttons. “Ready, sir,” she said.
“Apollo, this is Galactica-Actual. Whatever is beside you is a cylon trick. Two basestars just jumped away with barely any damage. They accomplished what they came to do. Now, shoot that thing down!”
“I can’t.” Lee’s first words in several minutes.
“Repeat, Apollo.”
“I can’t do it. It’s Kara. I can’t do it, dad.”
“Listen to me, son. Kara is dead. If that is her beside you, then you know what she is.”
“I won’t do it. Would you have me shoot down Athena as well? Cylon or not, I don’t care. She’s here. I can’t and I won’t let her go again.”
“Dualla, open channel to all vipers.”
Adama looked at the viper chart.
“Red squadron, this is Galactia-Actual. Target the bird next to Apollo and shoot it down.”
“No!” Lee cried over the com. “It’s Starbuck. She knows the way to Earth.”
“Cut him off now,” Adama growled at Dee.
Lee’s cries ceased.
For once in a long time, Roslin, who had listened intently beside Adama, wished Elosha was still with her. Was this part of the prophecy?
oOo
MAIN CYLON BASESTAR—CONTROL ROOM
The old man hybrid, the first hybrid’s voice echoed in Leoben’s head: “This has happened before. This will happen again.”
Though Kendra Shaw had destroyed him, Leoben had all his memories. Leoben was the first child, the first organic or humanoid cylon. He even knew of the hybrid’s prophecy about Kara, the bringer of death. All of his line did, and none told the others.
Nor did they care if Kara would lead humanity to its destruction.
They did it all for love.
Cavil turned again to Leoben, removing his hands from the communication-to-ship hybrid goo. Again, the same question: “What have you done?”
This time, Leoben answered, “I have learned to love, Cavil. The one thing we all have wished to learn from humans.”
Leoben caught Boomer’s glance. He would not reveal her involvement.
“Love?” Cavil scoffed. “Love!”
Doral, a.k.a. Five, looked on, interested. Simon looked on as if observing an experiment. Two Sixes looked away, but they could see each other’s tears.
“She was the only important human in the lot,” Cavil said, “and you handed her right over. Dare I meantion that I still don’t know how you got her and her viper on board and had the centurions not report it. And the hybrid—.”
“You would not listen to the hybrid, brother. Even so, the hybrid would not have told you; she knew how important Kara was.”
“And what was that destiny, brother?” Cavil spat in his face on the last word.
“All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again.”
Cavil sneered in his face. “Fool. All of you are such fools.”
“You are the fool, younger brother. I am the eldest, and to me our hybrid father gave his prophecies. He heard the words of God and our hybrid here hears only pieces of them.
“I care not of Kara’s destiny. I care that this time she is with the man she loves.”
“You do have a heart, Leoben. One meant to be broken!” Cavil grabbed a piece of metal debris near him and stabbed Leoben through the heart.
Although Leoben could have dodged it or stopped Cavil’s blow, he chose not to, knowing he had bought a far greater prize.
With a smile on his face, despite the pain, he said, “You sent me to God before, my love. Have mercy on me once more.”
As he crumbled to the ground, Simon came to him, but it was too late.
“He was the eldest,” Doral said.
“Not for much longer,” Cavil replied. “I will get rid of them all.”

EPISODE TWO: THREE AGAINST TWO
MAIN CYLON BASESTAR: RESURRECTION ROOM #1
“D’Anna, D’Anna,” the voice woke Three from her long slumber, a slumber from which she thought she would never return.
She opened her eyes to see Six. “Caprica?”
“No,” Six told her, “but I have word from her, a plea!” Tears flowed down Six’s face.
D’Anna reached up to touch them. “What blasphemy have we visited upon the Loving God?”
“Leoben,” Six cried softly. “Leoben.”
D’Anna tried to stand. Her eldest brother, the one who knew all the words of God was in danger. She did not yet have the strength to stand.
“Cavil murdered him in front of us all.” The venom palpable in her voice, she continued, “He doesn’t want to box him, D’Anna. He wants to exterminate him. Cavil is to eldest now.”
