Found in the Sea

Sequel to “Swallowed in the Sea.” Leoben rescues Kara.

Second story in the Sea series

Chapter One: True Identity

In his shuttle, Leoben reviewed the skirmish report—the Centurions had fired on Kara, but there was a chance she survived.

“They may soon use atomics,” Caprica Six said. “We cannot stay!”

Leoben took her hand. She understood. She would download another Leoben, and he would leave for the surface. If he did not make it back before the atomics, some part of him would be lost forever, but his love could never be forsaken.

When he feels, he is no longer a machine. Leoben/Kara Eye of Jupiter

First story in the Sea series

“The danger to us is unacceptable.” In this moment, he truly was machine. He could not feel. He dared not feel. Galactica would nuke the surface. The radiation would destroy them all. Somewhere his consciousness would still survive. The others would take another Leoben out of storage, another one with memories of her.

I will never forget this.

He tried to imagine so many times what it felt to kiss. He no longer had to imagine. He knew crush, lust.

And he knew love.

“They have orders that Three and Baltar make it to the surface,” the Three next to him protested.

“What does it matter?” Cavil’s logic returned to him “Wipe the human race out forever. We are machine. What does it matter if we find Earth in five days or five thousand years?”

Machine. Can he be a machine now?

The danger to us is unacceptable.

The danger to her is unacceptable.

He placed his hands in the goo. He linked his mind to the Hybrid.

He remembered her.

His neutral expression broke bitterly into a frown.

“Leoben?” asked Caprica beside him.

He turned his cold stare to Three. “You will order the centurions to protect Kara at all costs.”

He closed his eyes. The hybrid’s voice came to the humanoid models clear and unbroken: “The pattern finder shall embrace the stars. All will fade, but the finder and the star remain.”

Post “Maelstrom”

Second story in the Realizing series

Tigh looked on, shocked. His one eye threatened to water. For all the times in the past he had hated Kara, then for all the times he had grown warm to her on New Caprica, he realized he had no one left. He lost his wife, but after that he looked after Kara, who reminded him of himself. He tried to look after her, especially after what he discovered about Leoben.

Now he would have to look out after the Old Man and Apollo. She would have wanted him to. Though he had no children, since New Caprica, Kara had been the awkward niece. Now he must look after her would-be father-in-law and husband.

It had been so clear to so many. For years, he knew nothing could stop Starbuck and Apollo. Until the cylons changed things and gave them a rose-colored life as a broken Kara and Lee.

Tigh remained in CIC as Adama trudged out of CIC toward the hangar. Helo followed.

Dee hung her head low, knowing that, in many ways, she would never see her husband again.

Gaeta looked on. A strange weight fell upon him, grief as he had never imagined it. Something in his head clicked.

oOo

An eerie silence fell upon the hanger deck as Apollo landed. Not even his landing gear appeared to make much sound. The silence in everyone’s heads was deafening.

On any day, a pilot may die. But this was no pilot. This was a legend. Starbuck, the other half of Apollo.

Now Apollo landed in the hanger alone.

The Chief helped him out of the viper. He said nothing.

Lee caught his father’s eye. He saluted him. Lee raised his hand, but could not finish the salute.

He fell upon his knees and wept.

Adama bent down to him. He joined in his son’s tears.

The others in the hangar began to step away from them, giving them their room.

Helo looked on. Athena stood in the distance.

You have a destiny, Kara. They can put you with someone you like. Athena remembered saying those words to her after she escaped The Farm.

The man she loved stood in front of them, but then again, the man she loved was dead. He died with her.

oOo

Caprica Six fell into an uneasy sleep. She dreamt she was back on the Cylon Baseship. She walked down the corridors, but none of the other Six models would look at her. The Brother Cavils hissed their disapproval.

Finally rounding a corner, she found the Boomer Eight speaking in hushed tones to a Simon.

She heard weeping that tore her soul.

She pushed past Boomer and Simon and saw Leoben kneeling on the floor. He sobbed into a woman’s blond hair. Caprica could not make out the woman’s features from her burnt flesh.

Caprica reached forward to touch Leoben’s shoulder. His pain flowed into her, and she could hear his voice: “This is love.”

Before the final events of Maelstrom, Leoben has a vision.

First story of Realizing (I Love You) – LeobenKara

Leoben jerked his hands out of the hybrid interaction fluid of the navigation panel. The vision had been clear—undeniable. But, had it happened yet, or was it yet to come?

The Sixes looked at him with suspicion.

“If you have any love for God, you will keep the Cavils and Fives from me,” he said quickly.

One of them nodded for all.

He looked at the Eight across from her. “Where is your sister Boomer? She must meet me at once at the hybrid.”

The Eight said nothing but felt a strange sadness as Leoben left the area.

“God have mercy,” the Eight said, our leader is weeping.

oOo

At the hybrid, Leoben waited for Boomer. He relived his vision several times as he connected his mind to the hybrid’s mind. She understood. She knew where to go.

Boomer stood behind him, sensing his grief as she would if he were an Eight.

“We must go,” he said, “or Kara will die.”

Season Three, after Maelstrom.

“Today, we lay to rest our fallen heroes. May they find peace with the gods. So say we all.”

So say we all.

The rest of Roslin’s words swarmed around Lee’s ears, but he did not hear them. He could feel nothing, not even a squeeze on his arm from Cally.

He did not pay attention to the others leaving. He did not hear his father.

“Major,” Adama said.

Lee looked at him, his hollow eyes only responding to the mention of his rank.

“It’s time to go home, Lee.”

“I have no home, not anymore.”

Adama grabbed the third dog tag hanging from Lee’s neck. He pulled. Lee yanked the tag away.

“This is my home,” Lee said. “She is my home,”

“She’s dead, Lee.”

“Then so am I.”

Fade

Kara’s thoughts Maelstrom. One Shot

Fifth story in The Path to Phoenix series

We all must accept our destinies. I have tried to run away, but in the end I see that you and I will never be unless I pass through the storm. You are not strong enough yet to follow me, but you will be.

Fade II

Post Finale

(not part of Path to Phoenix)

Lee watched the most important person in his life fade away. In fact, she had not faded as he watched. She had already been dead some time, but he had denied it. He had hoped so badly to see her again, wanted it.

In the end, it was everyone who loved her that revived her ghost. First Leoben found her soul. A part of that unknown being that called itself Gaius’ god revealed itself to her through her image of Leoben. Lee hadn’t known the extent of her vision. He hadn’t known that she had sex with him. But even if he did, Lee did not care.

Lee remembered the day he met her. The day that was most precious to him and filled with the most regret. If Zak had not have died, maybe they would have broken up and she could have ended up with Lee.

They did end up together. Across stars and death itself, Starbuck and Apollo reunited one last time. But life had become ugly for so many. His wife, ex-wife, killed herself. Her husband became closer to the perfect machine he had always known he was.

Even as her ghost walked away and bid Sam farewell, he knew he would see her on the other side.

It’s time to go back, Kara, Sam’s voice came to her mind, He’ll become a ghost after you, a ghost in a living shell.

To be continued in “Rebirth.”

He never forgave her for betraying him. For worse, never telling him why.

Lee found Kara at a practice range. Enraged, she hit a few targets. She yelled something deep and guttural, nothing he understood but rage and pain.

She had no right to feel that way. That was how he felt, and she was no equal. Once, Apollo and Starbuck were spoken in one breath. Now their names remained far away

“You missed,” he said, laughing to himself.

“I’m not on duty, Major. I don’t need your opinion.”

“You’ve never needed it, Captain. But you took it once: ‘No point unless you’re getting married.’ You’ve made your point, Captain.”

“What point did you want, Lee? That I’m frakked up?”

“You’ve always been. I’ve been wondering how long you can last without frakking up.”

Kara stepped closer to him and handed him the gun. “Show me how frakked up I am.”

Without missing a beat, he aimed the gun at her chest, calling her bluff. She grabbed the gun, aimed it higher, and she turned to the side.

“Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”

Lee lowered the gun. “That’s your problem, not mine.”

Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”

He thought of the one time they made love, then how she twisted his words and ripped his heart out.

He squeezed the trigger, and then squeezed again. This was the only way they would be together.

Alternative Ending 2

Finish it,” she said. “Don’t start what you can’t finish.”

Lee lowered the gun. “That’s your problem, not mine.”

She grabbed his hand quickly and pulled the gun back into position. With her hand wrapped around his, she looked into his eyes one final time. She would not hurt him or any Adamas any longer.

Her thumb over his trigger finger, she squeezed.

The Reason Why

During Season Three, with references to “The Cylon’s Secret.”

Third story in The Path to Phoenix series

Tom Zarek remembered the earlier days after the First Cylon War, long before he became known as a terrorist, Vice President, vigilante President, and a Vice President again. Looking back on his life, he thought he had improved since the earlier days. He had no one to prove himself to, only himself. He had long since ignored his well-to-do family’s wishes.

Omega changed his life. Had things gone down like his captain wanted, he would have still lived under Nader’s thumb and always told he was expendable. Other times je was told he was expendable, but after Omega, things were different.

He remembered Laea often. She became the picture of his inner voice—his conscious. Although twenty years had gone by, her face never aged in his mind. Many years that he had been on jail for what colonists called terrorism, he imagined her. He consulted her. Did he make her proud?

Long ago, his fear nearly cost him her memory. Cylons, of all things, companions there were called, saved him. Without Gamma and Epsilon, her memory would have haunted him into his nightmares rather than his pleasant dreams.

He had not met anyone like Laea since. No one he met was beautiful, innocent, and surprising like her.

Some days, he saw Baltar as a cowardly creep. Laea would not like him. Tom often saw her frown in disappointment as he thought back on all of his decisions and actions that helped Baltar win the presidency.

It had been all for democracy, and his own gain. He disliked the fact that Roslin’s term of presidency had been because she conveniently survived.

He learned now that she was more than qualified. Words were not enough for how well she had done.

He had only wanted to help on New Caprica. As they faced their deaths, he saw her smile. She admired him for his captivity for those four months. In her face, he saw Laea.

She needed protection, like Laea. Although she was not innocent like Laea, she was innocent to blood on her hands. During his brief time as President, he cleaned her impending presidency. He executed many of the traitors.

His gift to Laea and Roslin.
